Play Ogg Vorbis in iTunes on Intel (OS X)
Submitted by alanhogan on April 25, 2007 - 1:18am.
Tip | Apple | iTunes | Mac | mp3 | music | Ogg | OS X
Recently acquiring an album in Ogg Vorbis format (.ogg files), I was disappointed to realize that they do not play in iTunes. After a bit of searching on the Internet and a bunch of false leads, I'm hear to share with you the best way to do this. There is no need to convert Ogg to MP3 or Ogg to AAC. This tool does not seem to run slowly and works even on the latest Intel Macs, problems other solutions seem to have. (Also note – Windows users, sorry, this only applies for Mac OS X users!)
All you need is the component for QuickTime (upon which iTunes bases its playing capabilities) from Xiph.org. It's a free download from http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/download.html.
A note on installation - Put the .component file in your ~/Library/Components directory, which you may need to create. So if your short user name is "jones" then go to your home directory, "jones", and then Library, and open or create the "Components" folder. Also, if that does not seem to work, close QuickTime and iTunes. Re-open iTunes and you will see you can import and play .ogg files just like MP3!
Enjoy.
Thanks

As do many people using Drupal to power their website, I get a lot of comment spam, and Drupal's spam filter is horrible! So I have permanently disabled comments on old.alanhogan.com. Try the new version of this page (which may not exist, but should if this page actually has content besides a list of other articles).
Consider using my contact form to get in touch. And remember that AlanHogan.com is live and old.alanhogan.com is here as a backup only, and a stopgap measure because some AlanHogan.com functionality is not implemented yet.
